ChatGPT Enterprise for businesses launches [Link]

Capitalizing on the viral success of its ChatGPT, OpenAI announces the launch of ChatGPT Enterprise, a business version of its AI-powered chatbot app.

The lowdown on ChatGPT Enterprise:

  • It can perform the same tasks as ChatGPT, such as writing emails, drafting essays, and debugging computer code - yet it boasts added “enterprise-grade” privacy and data analysis, along with enhanced performance and customization features.

  • These capabilities and more put it on par with Microsoft’s Bing Chat Enterprise, a competing enterprise-oriented chatbot service.

  • OpenAI points to interest among businesses for the service, claiming ChatGPT has been adopted by teams in 80%+ of Fortune 500 companies.

Yet is ChatGPT itself built to last? This development comes as OpenAI goes under pressure to monetize the wildly popular tool amid its rising operational and development costs. OpenAI made only $30M in revenue in fiscal year 2022.

US Air Force eyes 2K AI drones worth $6B [Link]

In its bid for “air superiority,” the US Air Force wants 2,000 pilotless AI-powered drones, to serve alongside its human pilots, to the tune of $6B as each aircraft costs around $3M.

Just earlier this month, in a 1st-of-its-kind AI-controlled flight test, the aerial arm of the US military flew the 30 ft. long XQ-58A Valkyrie drone for 3 hours.

The AI-driven Valkyrie drones are built to perform tasks such as surveillance, resupply missions, or swarming as a group in order to fight alongside human pilots. Uncrewed Valkyrie aircraft have been developed by the Air Force for years now, well before the boom of gen AI for the bigger public and civilian market.

As the race for AI supremacy among countries like the US and China heats up, officials estimate that it could take some 5 to 10 years to build an AI drone that can perform real air combat.

AI needs ‘human control’: Microsoft president [Link]

Microsoft President and Vice-Chairman Brad Smith stresses the importance of human control over AI, saying that while AI offers potential benefits, it also presents risks if not properly managed.

Some of Smith’s key points:

  • The need to maintain human control over AI to prevent its potential misuse by governments, military organizations, or other entities. He drew parallels with safety mechanisms in other technologies, such as circuit breakers in electricity and emergency brakes in vehicles.

  • The passage of new laws and regulations to ensure the responsible development and deployment of AI. He referenced the concerns raised by tech leaders, including Sam Altman of OpenAI, about the risks posed by AI, comparing these concerns to the need for safety measures in other technologies.

  • The need to have safety controls, akin to circuit breakers and emergency brakes, to avoid undesired outcomes.

He also emphasized AI's impact on jobs, noting that AI should be viewed as a tool that supplements human work rather than replaces jobs entirely.

IBM Chairman and CEO Arvind Krishna shares a similar perspective, stating that AI will augment, not replace, white-collar jobs, leading to increased GDP and economic growth.

What are 'GPU rich' and 'GPU poor' companies? [Link]

Nvidia GPUs are touted as critical to AI development, providing access to powerful models and a competitive edge.

Research firm SemiAnalysis categorizes the tech industry into two main groups:

Nvidia GPUs are pivotal for training AI models, and companies with ample GPU resources are positioned to lead the AI race. Meta, with its significant H100 GPUs, is set to become one of the top GPU-rich companies, while Google's focus on efficient architecture and rapid iteration is propelling it to the forefront of AI development.
