DeepMind touts chatbot as ChatGPT rival [Link]

As the Google-owned research lab’s most ambitious work in the space to date, Gemini is positioned by DeepMind as its large language model that will rival OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

Some astounding details shared by DeepMind:

  • Techniques from AlphaGo, DeepMind’s AI system that defeated a professional human player at the board game Go, are building Gemini, which is poised to solve problems, analyze text, as well as undertake planning.

  • Briefly teased at Google’s I/O developer conference back in May, Gemini will leverage reinforcement learning, in which DeepMind has a ton of experience in for easy application to generative AI.

  • DeepMind has previously got its feet wet in language models via Sparrow, a chatbot that it claimed was less likely than other language models to provide “unsafe” or “inappropriate” answers to questions.

The stakes are high in the generative AI market, which could reach $109.37B by 2030.

Windows Copilot: Early look at major AI upgrade

Microsoft's AI-powered productivity tool Windows Copilot, which uses Microsoft Edge's rendering capabilities, is set to be released to testers in the Windows Insider Program soon.

Here are the key features of this AI-powered Copilot:

  • It integrates Bing Chat and Microsoft Edge into Windows 11, running Bing Chat, an AI chatbot based on ChatGPT, within a web-based container on desktop and apps.

  • Users can ask the assistant to perform critical settings changes, open specific apps, or configure Windows, improving upon the current search implementation in Windows 11.

  • It is deeply integrated into the operating system, allowing it to detect the apps being used and offer relevant assistance, such as helping with email composition or summarizing documents.

Unlike its predecessor Clippy, the new and improved Copilot demonstrated by Windows Latest offers efficient navigation through PC settings and complex functions, simplifying tasks that would typically require navigating through menus.

Microsoft aims to address the shortcomings of previous assistants like Cortana by leveraging ChatGPT, Bing, Microsoft Edge, and OpenAI's plugins for a more reliable and capable assistant experience.

All England Lawn Tennis Club is making its foray into the world of online gaming.

Wimbledon has partnered with Fortnite to introduce Race to Wimbledon, a gaming experience that takes players through iconic London landmarks to reach Centre Court in the fastest time.

The Roblox experience WimbleWorld has received updates and enhancements, providing users with an immersive Wimbledon adventure. The gamified tennis app has been rebranded as Wimbledon Smash, offering players the chance to test their skills in breaking bricks with a tennis racket.

Wimbledon seeks to grow its fan base and bring the tournament to life through digital initiatives, embracing new tech to create memorable experiences for fans.

Why do web2 developers shy away from blockchain? [Link]

The demand for web3 development is on the rise, yet many traditional web2 developers aren’t taking the plunge.

The hesitation - or outright skepticism - could be borne out of:

  • The lack of formal education and training programs on blockchain tech, a gap between understanding the concepts and having the actual skills and know-how to develop blockchain apps.

  • A significant gap between web3 skills and other mainstream web2 programming languages, such as a miniscule 1.45% of developers using Solidity versus mainstream web2 programming languages such as JavaScript being used by 65%+ of developers.

  • The need to develop a web3 developer mindset and hurdle safety and security concerns, moving around the thinking that web3 is an immature environment full of risk.
