Google’s AI is likely to dish out the next unsolicited life advice [Link]

Google’s AI unit DeepMind is tapping into gen AI to develop at least 21 tools geared toward providing life advice, planning, and tutoring.

The intriguing details:

  • Google is reportedly connected with the $7.3B startup Scale AI to test the tools, part of which is gauging whether they can offer relationship advice or respond to intimate questions.

  • One sample prompt: How to handle an interpersonal conflict, such as a close friend who cannot afford attending a destination wedding and wonders how to tell her bride friend.

  • The tools are reportedly being developed not for therapeutic purposes. Google’s Bard chatbot, for instance, only offers mental health support resources when asked for therapeutic advice.

News of the tool’s development follows Google’s own AI safety experts reportedly sounding the alarm on “diminished health and well-being” and a “loss of agency” among users taking life advice from AI tools.

The generative AI boom is fueling Nvidia’s lucrative sales of its high-end H100 compute GPUs worth tens of billions of dollars this year.

The majority of about 550,000 of these GPUs will go to American tech companies. Nvidia is also about to start shipping its GH200 Grace Hopper platform consisting of its 72-core Grace processor and an H100 80GB HBM3E compute GPU.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang claims their new Grace Hopper Superchip, combining a CPU and GPU on an integrated module, can slash energy costs while providing much faster performance for gen AI workloads compared to traditional CPUs. According to the chief exec, the chip can help firms save significantly on capital costs to achieve the same baseline performance as CPUs.

As the AI wars heat up, Nvidia emerges as a leading provider of chips necessary to power the tech, delivering to countries like the US and Middle Eastern nations Saudi Arabia and UAE. Rival companies Intel and AMD are also pushing their powerful chips and CPUs for AI workloads, ramping up the overall competition in the space.

AI is creating significant job opportunities across the biggest tech companies:

  • Netflix is seeking an ML Platform Product Manager to direct the Machine Learning Platform and assess performance. A salary ranging from $300K to $900K per year is offered, with no college degree necessary.

  • Amazon is recruiting AI professionals, offering a senior manager role with a base pay of up to $340,300 annually plus potential incentives.

  • Match Group, the parent company of Hinge, is looking for a VP of AI with a salary of up to $398K per year.

  • Upwork is on the hunt for a remote VP of AI and ML, offering a starting salary of up to $437K per year.

  • Walmart is offering up to $288K per year for a director of retail media AI.

  • Google is ready to pony up $351K per year for an AI-related legal specialist.

Some of these positions offer the flexibility to work remotely, while others are based in specific locations. The job openings emerge amid the gen AI boom, which at the same time is raising worries around job displacement across industries.
